Heidi Klum Shares Photos in Bikini on "Beautiful" Beach Day

This week, Heidi Klum hit the shoreline on a “beautiful” day with her husband, Tokio Hotel rocker Tom Kaulitz, reminding the world that she still has one of the fittest bodies on the beach. So how does the German supermodel and host of Making the Cut manage to feel so confident? “Your metabolism definitely changes when you turn 40,” she told Women’s Health. “I always thought, ‘That’s not going to happen to me.’ But it is happening to me. If I indulge more, I have to exercise more. I’ve figured out what works for me.” Here are 6 of her best diet and fitness secrets, and the beach photos that prove they work.

Klum refuses to starve her way to a slender figure. “The myth that models don’t eat is totally not true,” she told Shape. “I just think that because we’re in this business, we have to choose more wisely.” According to the model, her diet mostly consists of fruits, vegetable, and lean protein. “It’s important to keep a balanced diet, but I’m not a fan of deprivation. If I want a cheeseburger, I am not only going to eat that cheeseburger, but I’m going to enjoy that cheeseburger.”

Klum has a specific drink of choice to start off the day. “In 2013, I made a New Year’s resolution to drink a fruit and veggie smoothie every morning. It’s one of those that went from a resolution to a life habit. My kids and I do it together, and we love it,” she told Shape

Klum tries to look at exercises as a vehicle to stay healthy—not just a way to stay slim. “It’s not just about doing the cardio so that you’re nice and fit, and slim and trim, but your heart needs to pump, too,” she told Shape. “Whenever I need motivation, I think of the big picture. I want to be as healthy as possible for myself and my family.”

“I don’t really exercise that much,” she admitted during an interview with Buro27. “I mean, two times a week for sure. I will do the Stairmaster I’ve got at home or a running machine. I also think it’s important not to exercise too much. I don’t think you have to do a lot, but if you do a little bit all the time, I think that’s important. Sometimes I’ll do some little weights while I’m running.”

“I try to be active as much as possible,” she told Shape but “I don’t have time for workouts every day.” This is why she gets creative, incorporating family time into her workouts. “Balancing my work and their schedules makes it hard to find time for a traditional exercise routine, so we try to do as many outdoor activities as a family as possible. We love to go on bike rides, take our dogs hiking, or jump on the trampoline. That’s the best way to stay fit and healthy—do things that don’t feel like work.”

She also revealed to Shape that she loves running. “My favorite workout is a long run along the West Side Highway, which stretches along the Hudson River in New York City…it’s a beautiful path, and you always feel surrounded by such an amazing community. You see the same people running every morning, and they inspire me to keep going. That and knowing there is a Starbucks coffee at the end of the route!” she said.
